The lake is marvelous it really has a spell, just like they say. From San Pedro I made some interesting trips. Chichicastenango and its thursday market was interesting. But I liked the cathedral most because of its special combination of Christian and Mayan celebrations. I have been sitting for a while looking at a Shamaan doing his prayers and later on the stairs before the church also, but then with a big smokey fire.
The journey back to San Pedro was pretty awful because I was getting sick and got nausea. Hal an hour before San Pedro the road was blocked by a DHL car which made a wrong manouevre. So I started to walk with one of mu friends. The road was in a pretty bad condition because of Agatha and the heavy rainfall afterwards. Even between that morning and afternoon the road was changed by erosion and its corruption.
I went to Santiago by boat. It has, to my opinion an even better market than Chichi. There I went also to the Maximon, (San Simon, or the bad saint). I joined (for a while, because the ceremonies last very long and are incomprehensable) a ceremony.
On saturday I visited a small museum about the history of Lago Atitlan and its culture. Of volcanic origin, since 150000 years. The circular crater has been changed into a moon sickle by the three upcoming volcanoes of later date. The original Tz'utujel Maya tribe has been conquered by the Spaniards in close cooperation with the Kaqchikel Mayas. But after some ages they divided the lake (N and S) and made peace.
During the world cup final (Ger/Uru) I decide to go to the medical centre, because my stomach did not cure (after 4 days). The nice doctor diagnosed a bacteria, so I got some medicine. A very good government service for free. The same day I was starting to feel better again.
On sunday I made a marvellous horse ride on the slopes of the San Pedro volcano, towards a black beach where I could swim in the lake. Andres (13 yrs) was my guide. I passed a place where Agatha had done her devastating work. Incredible what a hurricane like this can do.
This morning I returned back to Antigua, by 4 chicken buses, because I cannot stand the nervous movements of the small buses. This was also not very comfortable, but the buses connected perfectly and I arrived in a reasonable time, before noon.
Tomorrow I will go up the Pacaya and hope to see what this phenomenon is like.
The coming days are for chilling, so probably doing nothing but look at the people and reading somewhat.
After my two mistakes of buying a Spanish book of Isabel Allende (to complicated) and exchanging it for a Tom Claney (not interesting at all), I just exchanged it to 3 small spanish ones, hopefully of the right level.
Thursday will be my flight back home.
