My first days in Guatemala

After a pleasant but long flight (24 hours) I have arrived in Antigua. A chauffeur of the Spanish school collected me at the airport and brought me to the family where I would stay (in Antigua). Felt good. The family is very nice, we talk a lot and food is very OK.
My self confidence is returning after my bad feelings about this trip (security, outburst of Vulcano Pacaya and tropical storm Agatha). I think it was a good decision to go and we will see what happens.
I walked a lot in Guatemala to discover this beautiful and interesting town, not too big, so I can do it on foot, and with very colonial systematical squares.
I visited museums, ruins, market, the gym (not to disaccustom), a Jade factory and many cafe´s.
This morning I started my Spanish lessons. It appears to be an individual course of 1 week (although I have asked for a combined class). Probably I am too good or there are not enough students (most likely, the latter :-)). Anyway, at least my Spanish was not good enough to read Isabel Allendes roman (something like La casa de los espiritus, I did not understand a word of the first 2 pages), so I exchanged it for a Tom Clancy paperback. At least reading should be fun. My Spanish reading now only comes from everyday newspaper, very relaxing, especially with good Guatemalan coffee.
I liked my first lessons and was very tired afterwards, a good sign.

Hoi Tom,

Zo ver weg en door het lezen van je reisverslagen toch dichtbij.

Als ik je een advies mag geven: lees 'Huis met de geesten' in het Nederlands, het mooiste boek ooit!
Have fun, Carly
